Hypnosis has a mixed reputation in popular culture. But what about Clinical Hypnosis? How much do you know about it?

Clinical Hypnosis for Perinatal Mental Health with Abby Abigail Burd, California psychotherapist

Recently, my colleague Dr. Kat Kaeni, outgoing president of the board of Postpartum Support International, interviewed me on her popular Mom & Mind Podcast. Her long running podcast (I was episode 360 – love that number) is one of my top recommended for perinatal mental health.

As you can imagine from the number, Kat has already covered a multitude of topics under the umbrella of reproductive mental health. But she was intrigued by some of the novel approaches to reproductive trauma I am introducing in my upcoming trainings. Kat invited me to come on the podcast and YouTube channel. She asked me to explain more about clinical hypnosis and strategic psychotherapy. We explored how they can be applied to postpartum anxiety, PTSD and healing reproductive trauma.

Clinical Hypnosis and Strategic Psychotherapy for Perinatal Mental Health – video highlights

I’m grateful to Kat for opening up her platform to let me share about two lesser known techniques that I find are gentle, but powerful ways to heal reproductive trauma and other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. In the video above (and the connected podcast) you’ll hear:
  • An explanation of clinical hypnosis: what it is and what it is not
  • How clinical hypnosis is more than a state of deep relaxation and how it can deliver hard messages in way that seems “more palatable.”
  • An explanation of strategic psychotherapy and differentiation and how they can address anxiety and trauma
  • How clinical hypnotherapy and strategic psychotherapy are complementary modalities and can be helpful to people with perinatal mental health difficulties
  • Some caution on how hypnosis is a form of dissociation, so therapists must tread carefully with those who have a history of PTSD and feel competent in treating trauma
  • How hypnotherapy can help you create and deepen “a safe place”
  • A deeper dive previewing the upcoming trainings on novel approaches, including differentiation and utilization
